Feeling isolated? Don’t feel like you fit in with the in-group? Seems like no wants to engage with you? If this describes how you feel, this week I want to encourage you. These feelings can feel more intense during and around the holiday season. I assure you there is nothing wrong with you. I want to challenge you to view isolation in a different way, through different lenses.
With this week’s blog, I want to introduce a special journey. The journey of preparation while feeling like you are isolated. This journey is not for the faint in heart. Isolation doesn’t have to be taken as negative. It can be quite an enlightening experience. Sometimes we are separated from depending on others for a reason. I like to call it a time to be more self-aware, a building period, and a time to prepare for your purpose in life.
Getting tough mentally is not a negative. There comes a point when everything somebody says or do should not disrupt your focus or cause you to go into a slump. There is a higher place you should be. I have prepared 3 points to guide you through the process.
Know what feeds you holistically. This is important because everything that goes into you should contribute to your health. It should not make you feel shame or guilt. If it does, I would question its purpose. This isn’t just about food, it’s about what you feed your mind and how you satisfy your body. It’s a holistic approach to self-awareness. Sometimes the first hint that you don’t fit in with others is because the things they feed on don’t work for you. Therefore, you feel out of place.
During this time understand those things that make you feel whole. Relish in those things. There is a bible verse that I go to that helps me put things in perspective. I have used it to help guide my thoughts and provide guidance in what I feed myself holistically.
Philippians 4:8 King James Version (KJV)
8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
Understand Your Higher Calling
It’s not always clear to us what our purpose in life is. I used to ponder this myself. It took years of living, making some mistakes, going in a different direction at times before I was able to understand. It took some isolation periods and putting some key pieces together before I caught a glimpse of the talents and gifts I inhabited. Then I had to believe that a nobody like me was called to do something amazing. I had to stand firm on this belief regardless of how things looked or what others said.
During this phase of your journey, doubt will challenge you. It will try to make you doubt the talents and gifts that you possess. You may even be tempted to think that because an opportunity is not standing right in front of you at the very moment you have nothing. You will be tempted to give up saying, that it all means nothing. This is the time to be strong. Don’t be swayed by the negative talk by others or yourself. Embrace this time to learn about your talents and gifts. How do the work as an expression of your higher calling?
Growth in Isolation
Adopt that being in isolation is about growth. You will be tempted to call it loneliness and try to belong somewhere or be with someone, but that only prolongs your growth. Understand being in isolation is not always sitting in a room by yourself, it can be quite the opposite. It can be sitting in a room with people and feeling like an outsider. But an outsider because you think and see things a different way, not because something is wrong with you.
If you are one that believes the universe is closing a door to get you back on a purposeful path, then accept this as a time to re-focus. This might be the most challenging phase of the journey because growth can be hindered if life lessons and events aren’t applied in a way that builds caters to growth. And that growth is not about your surrounding or what anybody else did, it’s all about YOU learning something about YOU.
I have given you much to consider. Everybody won’t understand, and this isn’t for everybody. But, for those who accept the challenge of focusing on growth instead of feeling isolated, I encourage and applaud you. Life involves so much for each us, it’s time we accept all the good it has to offer. And it starts by engaging in the 3 mentioned points: Feeding, Purpose, and Growth.
